UNICEF Launches ‘Meri Thaali Sehat Wali’ Campaign in Bihar to Promote Child Nutrition

PATNA (MR) : With September being observed as ‘Poshan Maah’, senior government officials from ICDS and the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme, along with UNICEF experts, came together for media sensitisation on nutrition and the launch of the Meri Thaali Sehat Wali campaign. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vinayak Mishra, Director, Mid-Day Meal (MDM), Education Department, Government of Bihar, said the scheme was launched not only to feed children but also to underscore that nutrition is a shared responsibility among families, communities, the media, and the government. He added that MDM has evolved from dry grains to cooked meals with a stronger focus on nutrition.

Mr. Pravin Bagi, Media Expert, highlighted the vital role the media plays in spreading awareness about government schemes, particularly in rural areas where people often miss out. He noted that the media has been instrumental in driving social change by improving health and nutrition, and reducing child mortality. Mr. Bagi stressed that building a better society begins with focusing on children, who represent the nation’s foundation and future. The sensitisation began with a welcome address by Dr. Pooja, Communication, Advocacy and Partnership Specialist, UNICEF, who called media professionals ‘key allies in bringing to light the social issues, especially those pertaining to children and adolescents.’

Setting the context, Dr. Shivani Dar, Nutrition Officer, UNICEF, drew attention to the persistent challenges of malnutrition in the state. ‘Nutrition is not charity; it is a right. Media can play a decisive role in turning this right into reality for every child, adolescent and woman in Bihar,’ she said. Experts and practitioners shared perspectives on the many dimensions of nutrition. Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Nalanda Medical College & Hospital (NMCH), Patna, and Nodal Officer, State Resource Centre- IYCF (Infant and Young Child Feeding), underlined how parents directly shape children’s food practices. Ms. Jaya Mishra, Training Officer, ICDS, spoke about the critical role of ICDS in improving diets for women and children. Dr. Sandip Ghosh, Nutrition Officer, UNICEF, demonstrated healthy diet packages designed to prevent anaemia and obesity.

The event also saw the official launch of the Meri Thaali Sehat Wali campaign materials, with dignitaries from ICDS, the MDM Department, and UNICEF unveiling them. The sensitisation programme brought together senior journalists, editors, TV and radio professionals, and digital creators, equipping them to report on nutrition with depth, empathy, and urgency.
